The University of North Carolina won a 23rd national championship (22 in NCAA) on Monday with a 1-0 victory over local rival Wake Forest in the College Cup final. Olivia Thomas scored the winning goal on a free kick in the second half. Damon Nahas led UNC to its first title in 12 years after taking over as interim coach in August following the abrupt retirement of Anson Dorrance, the program’s only previous coach.
