NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman confirmed that the league expects to add two more expansion teams in 2026, which would make for 16 total teams. In an interview with the Washington Post, Berman said that the process would begin later this year. A group from Boston was already approved by the NWSL board for entry into the league after 2024, when a Bay Area expansion team will join the return of the Utah Royals.
