After 240 caps for the Swedish national team, midfielder Caroline Seger announced her retirement from international football on Sunday. Seger was a key cog in Sweden’s midfield for 14 major international tournaments, encompassing every European Championship, World Cup, and Olympic Games from 2005 to 2023. Seger, who will continue playing as captain of FC Rosengård in the Swedish Damallsvenskan, also made her mark in the WPS earlier in her career. She played for the Philadelphia Independence in 2010, before being traded to the Western New York Flash. Seger captained the Flash – a team that included Alex Morgan, Christine Sinclair, and Marta – to the 2011 WPS Championship after defeating the Independence 5-4 on penalty kicks.
