The National Women’s Soccer League on Wednesday released the list of 55 players to be allocated to the eight inaugural teams. Of the 55 players, 23 are U.S. national team players, 16 are Canadian internationals and 16 are Mexican internationals. Which teams each player gets assigned to will be announced on Friday.
All 18 players from the U.S. 2012 Olympic gold medal winning roster are part of the group being allocated. The U.S. was slated to schedule up to 24 players and may still fulfill that maximum number, but 23 is the current number after midfielder Meghan Klingenberg reportedly decided to stay in Sweden to play.
One team will only be allocated two U.S. players, while the other seven teams will get three each. Every team will have two Canadian and two Mexican players.
Canada’s notable omission is forward Meslissa Tancredi, who is taking a year to finish her schooling but is still part of the national team program.
