here’s no getting around it. The Kansas City Current turned in what was arguably their worst performance of the National Women’s Soccer League season on August 14, losing to Gotham FC 2-1 away from home. The electricity of Croix Bethune’s assist less than 30 seconds into the match defused just as quickly, and by halftime the Current were behind and never regained the lead. (Please enjoy said assist, though.)
Such a schizoid showing has felt typical of this year’s Current: explosive and dominant one moment, fragile and vulnerable the next. Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home against the Seattle Reign does not change such an assessment.
The team now sits seventh place in the table, a full point per game off of last year’s record-setting results pace.
What is going on here, exactly? To what extent have Temwa Chawinga’s and Lorena’s lengthy absences and a lack of clear replacement for Claire Hutton been to blame? Has new head coach Chris Armas screwed up the flawless engine that was last year’s team on and off the field? And how much has just been weird, random, unexplainable bad luck?
