Jess Carter ends year of ups and downs on top

In a year full of ups and downs, Jess Carter got to call herself a champion not once, but twice.

Jess Carter’s 2025 has been marked by lofty highs and deep lows.

Gotham FC’s 1-0 win over the Washington Spirit sealed Carter’s distinction as the first player to win both a EURO title and a National Women’s Soccer League Championship in the same season. Throw in Gotham’s W Concacaf Champions League title this past May and the 28-year-old claimed a treble of trophies this calendar year.

However, for Carter, the road to these victories was not straightforward.

The center back had a turbulent EURO tournament. After a rough performance in England’s quarterfinal against Sweden, she called out the poisonous racist abuse she had been subjected to. She went on to play in England’s subsequent two knockout matches. She had a particularly solid outing against world champions in Spain in the final and helped England secure its second consecutive European title.
