Very different, but very same Spirit team back in NWSL Championship

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The visions are still there. Angelina may or may not be—officially not, according to the one person that mattered—fouling Leicy Santos before finding Barbra Banda up the right flank. Banda cooking Esme Morgan to get in on Aubrey Kingsbury. Banda beating Kingsbury to the near post with the goal that sunk the Spirit in the 2024 NWSL Championship.

“Thanks for bringing it up again,” Kingsbury said during Media Day ahead of the 2025 event, where the Spirit hope to do themselves one better than a year ago. “Obviously, it sucks to lose. No one wants to lose in a final. It kind of sits with you all offseason. Of course, it’s always been the goal to get back here.”

Morgan said she thought about it a lot at first, but after replaying it in her mind over and over again, she has made peace with it. She is looking ahead to Saturday’s clash with Gotham for the NWSL Championship.
