Catarina Macario will return to the United States women’s national team for the first time since last June to compete at the SheBelieves Cup later this month.
On Tuesday, U.S. head coach Emma Hayes named her 23-player roster for the friendly tournament that will feature games against Australia, Colombia, and Japan.
Macario last played for the U.S. on June 1, 2024, in Hayes’ first game in charge. The Chelsea FC forward missed the Olympics after initially being named to the U.S. roster due to persistent knee irritation following her torn ACL in 2022. She recently began increasing her minutes with Chelsea, including three straight starts in league play since the start of 2025.
Four uncapped players made the United States’ SheBelieves Cup roster, which features only 12 players from last year’s Olympic gold-medal winning team.
“This team is still growing, and I continue to be impressed with the dedication of our player pool to get better, individually and as a group,” Hayes said in a statement. “With many players at the beginning of their club preseasons, we’ll be patient with them but at the same time, we’re going to maximize the time we have together.”
The entire starting forward line from the Olympics remains absent from this roster, as has been the case for the past two international windows. Per U.S. Soccer, Trinity Rodman is still regaining fitness from rehabbing a back injury, Mallory Swanson has personal commitments, and Sophia Wilson (nee Smith) is “not physically ready for national team competition” after reaggravating an ankle injury in late 2024.
Also absent from the roster are midfielder Rose Lavelle, who recently had ankle surgery, and defender Naomi Girma, who is recovering from a calf injury.
Jane Campbell and Mandy McGlynn are the only two goalkeepers on the roster, a marked change in the first U.S. matches since the international retirement of two-time World Cup-winner Alyssa Naeher. Casey Murphy has been the backup goalkeeper for the last few years.
The four uncapped players on the SheBelieves Cup roster are defenders Tara McKeown and Gisele Thompson, midfielder Claire Hutton, and forward Michelle Cooper. All four players earned looks with Hayes in January at either the senior national team camp or the “Futures Camp” that was meant to evaluate young and less experienced players.
Thompson’s sister, Alyssa, was also named to the roster, marking the third time in team history that sisters have been named to the same roster.
Manchester United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce, Angel City defender Savy King and recent Bay FC signing Hannah Bebar will train with the team throughout the tournament but will not be rostered. All three players are uncapped.
The U.S. opens the tournament against Colombia on Feb. 20 in Houston, followed by a match against Australia on Feb. 23 in Glendale, Arizona, and a finale against Japan in San Diego on Feb. 26.
“We are facing three excellent teams with three very different styles and the tournament will be a great test to see who can perform against world-class players, but to see that, we need to give them opportunities,” Hayes said. “We have put in a lot of thought on how best to accomplish that while continuing to evolve and putting out a team that can win, so every game should be a lot of fun for the staff, the players and the fans.”
Lindsey Heaps (nee Horan) and Lynn Biyendolo (nee Williams) will play for the U.S. under their married names for the first time.
