The $400,000 in allocation money (plus a 2025 international roster spot) that the Houston Dash paid NJ/NY Gotham FC for forward/midfielder Yazmeen Ryan set a new National Women’s Soccer League record for a trade — but there’s a catch, of course. A couple, actually.
The $400,000 figure is only a record specifically for allocation money, not for an overall intra-league transfer. That record belongs to winger Maria Sanchez, who San Diego Wave FC acquired from Houston earlier this year for $500,000 total — $200,000 in allocation money and $300,000 in intra-league transfer funds.
Now, add to that the fact that Gotham FC sent $80,000 in intra-league transfer funds back to Houston. Why didn’t Houston just pay $320,000 and call it a day then? What is the difference between allocation money and intra-league transfer funds? And isn’t allocation money supposed to be gone?
