Boston’s National Women’s Soccer League expansion team, which is expected to begin play in 2026, confirmed on Thursday that it has hired Domènec Guasch as the team’s first general manager. Guasch joins Boston after 13 years at FC Barcelona, most recently as the head of management for women’s football.
Guasch is Boston’s first major hire since launching over a year ago. He will be the most senior-ranking leader on the sporting side, the club said.
“Domènec is a dynamic leader with an exceptional ability to identify and nurture championship-caliber talent,” controlling owner Jennifer Epstein said in a statement. “His extensive experience and forward-thinking vision position him perfectly to lead our sporting operations. With his innovative mindset and deep passion for the game, I’m confident he will lay the foundation for a club built to contend from day one.”
Guasch will lead the first effort in NWSL history to build an expansion team roster without an expansion draft. The newly updated NWSL collective bargaining agreement abolished drafts of all kinds.
Boston, which controversially announced its branding as “BOS Nation FC” in October but strongly indicated last week that it is considering a name change (which sources have corroborated to The Equalizer), will be the NWSL’s 15th team. A decision on a 16th team, which would also begin play in 2026, is expected in the coming weeks. Cincinnati, Cleveland and Denver are finalists for the spot.
In Guasch’s most recent role at Barcelona, he oversaw operations and recruitment and led player contract negotiations — similar tasks generally designated to general managers in the United States.
Barcelona has won three of the past four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, including two straight. The team’s former head coach, Jonatan Giráldez, left this summer to become head coach of the NWSL’s Washington Spirit.
“It’s an incredible honor to join this club and step into a city with such a rich tradition of sports excellence,” Guasch said in a statement. “The opportunity to build this team from the ground up is a challenge I fully embrace, and I’m eager to create a legacy that our fans and this city will celebrate for years to come. I’m excited to get to work assembling a world-class coaching staff and roster to compete at the highest level.”
