It was a transfer that had once seemed impossible, then slowly turned improbable, and is now complete. In fact, the move has caused shockwaves across the continent as the Dutch center-forward Vivianne Miedema made the switch after seven years from Arsenal to Manchester City on a free transfer.

The move caught many off-guard given her historical importance and contributions to the Gunners. Miedema is the all-time leading Women’s Super League goal-scorer and has 100+ goals for Arsenal having been their primary No. 9 since she joined the club from Bayern Munich in 2017.

The move to Manchester City is intriguing, not just because of the social impact of moving from one rival to another, but because it also poses a fundamental tactical question: where does Miedema fit in Gareth Taylor’s team?
