Ann-Katrin Berger doesn’t get nervous, not really. With a professional career spanning 15 years and four countries, the goalkeeper has plenty of experience to back up her confidence in net. Now, at NJ/NY Gotham FC, the 33-year-old is showing the National Women’s Soccer League that although she’s new here, she’s exactly where she’s supposed to be.
“If I were a nervous person, I probably would have been nervous the first game because I didn’t know what to expect,” Berger exclusively told The Equalizer. “I had a lot of meetings [with team and staff] before to understand how the people in front of me are working, and I think it’s paid off. I’ve enjoyed every single second on the pitch because that’s where I want to be and that’s the best way to help my team.”
Over five starts with Gotham, Berger has already proven to be among the elite goalkeepers in the league, boasting a 87.5% save percentage, the highest in the league to date. With 21 saves and two clean sheets, her performance has earned her a call up to the German women’s national team for a pair of UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 qualifying games against Poland in May and June.
“It was exciting, since the first minute I arrived here, I just loved it,” Berger said of her time so far with Gotham. “I can just play how I want to play and bring something to the team that maybe they didn’t have before.”
