Two stunning goals lifted Mexico past the United States women’s national team, 2-0 on Monday to defeat the Americans for just the second time in 43 meetings and the first time on U.S. soil. With the victory, Mexico advances as the winner of Group A at the Concacaf W Gold Cup and the U.S. advances as a second-place finisher.

Mexico dominated the Americans from the opening minutes, pressing a slow and rattled U.S. defense into mistakes and forcing the U.S. attack into predictable, disjointed passing patterns. Mexico deserves full credit for the result; for the U.S., the performance was a step back after an encouraging start to the Gold Cup. It also brought back memories of issues from yesteryear.
