Free agent and attacking midfielder Savannah McCaskill has signed with the San Diego Wave, multiple sources confirm to The Equalizer. McCaskill is expected to join San Diego on a three-year deal.
McCaskill previously played for Angel City FC, the Wave’s budding Southern California rival based in Los Angeles. She joined Angel City ahead of the team’s inaugural season (which was also the Wave’s inaugural season) in 2022. Typically deployed as Angel City’s No. 10 or in a wing role, McCaskill tallied seven goals and two assists in 21 regular-season games in her first season in LA. She registered four goals and three assists in 22 games in 2023, helping the team qualify for the playoffs for the first time. McCaskill registered the second-most minutes for Angel City in 2023 behind ironwoman defender Sarah Gorden.
McCaskill first entered the National Women’s Soccer League in 2018 with Sky Blue FC (now NJ/NY Gotham FC). She was traded to the Chicago Red Stars midway through 2019 and helped the Red Stars finish second and reach the NWSL Championship for the first time. Chicago lost that game to the North Carolina Courage, 4-0.
Racing Louisville FC picked up McCaskill via trade ahead of its 2021 NWSL expansion season. She played there for one year before taking part in another expansion season in 2022, this time with Angel City.
McCaskill was eligible to become an unrestricted free agent this season based on her expiring contract and her service years in the NWSL (five years minimum required for this offseason of free agency). She joins a Wave team that won the NWSL Shield in 2023 and already boasts significant attacking talent, including striker Alex Morgan and versatile 19-year-old Jaedyn Shaw.
