The Houston Dash have re-signed restricted free agent Maria Sanchez to what multiple sources tell The Equalizer is the largest contract in National Women’s Soccer League history.

The three-year deal with a mutual option for a fourth year is worth close to $1.5 million total, including guaranteed money and bonuses, and assuming the option is executed as expected.

Previously, Trinity Rodman was the league’s highest-paid player with a four-year, $1.1 million contract worth about $281,000 per year guaranteed. That deal was signed in early 2022.

Sanchez, a Mexico international, joined Houston on a full-time deal ahead of the 2022 NWSL season after a brief loan spell there in 2021. She has 64 caps for Mexico. In 2023, Sanchez played in every regular-season match for Houston.

“We are excited to share the signing of Maria Sanchez, a pivotal player and person on and off of the pitch,” Dash general manager Alex Singer said. “Maria is a difference maker who embodies the ambition our club has – her world-class left foot and attacking abilities, her desire to be a champion in Houston, and authentic connection to our community are what makes her a club leader. Securing Maria’s long-term future was a priority as we know she will play an important role for the Dash for years to come. Signing Maria to this robust, new deal signifies our commitment to investing in infrastructure and talent on the pitch and direction of our club.”
