Usually when a team has a coaching change in the National Women’s Soccer League, there is a bit of a bounce-back. In the games immediately after the change, the players and fans feed off the fresh energy to grab some points before cooling back off. But Angel City FC has been hot for almost three months under interim head coach Becki Tweed. With a 10-game undefeated run in the books, the Los Angeles-based team is barreling toward a playoff spot full speed ahead, or as fans have aptly coined it, #FullTweedAhead.
On June 15, Angel City formally announced the firing of head coach Freya Coombe, who was in the midst of her second season with the squad. The league was exactly halfway through the regular season, and Angel City was 11th in the standings with only nine points. Now, after winning Friday’s road matchup against Kansas City, Angel City is seventh with 24 points. Since taking over, Tweed has led ACFC to four wins and three ties in regular-season play, as well as two wins and a tie in Challenge Cup games.
