With the patience of a marathoner.
That is how the team’s new president, Mary Wittenberg, plans to take NJ/NY Gotham FC to the next level.
On Thursday, Gotham announced the conclusion of a nationwide search for a new president, selecting Wittenberg, the former president and CEO of the New York Road Runners and first woman to hold that role. Although there has been inconsistency and turnover in the business-side role, Wittenberg’s appointment signals a team focused squarely on continued, steady growth.
“There’s so much ahead for the future here,” Wittenberg told The Equalizer. “I have been following [the team] for a long time and I’m a huge believer in women’s sports. We’re at this major inflection point and all of women’s soccer is going to the next level. I believe that the National Women’s Soccer League is the top league in the world. A vibrant, thriving, phenomenal Gotham FC is critical to the success of the NWSL.”
