Canada showed that it was up to the task of beating the world’s best when it won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. When the World Cup kicks off next week, Canada will be playing to show the world that it is one of the top teams in the sport and should be treated with respect. To do that, it will need contributions from players all over the pitch.
The success of Canada is no longer mainly determined by how well legendary forward Christine Sinclair plays. The weight of an entire country has shifted from Sinclair’s shoulders to those of several dynamic players, including Jessie Fleming, Julia Grosso, Ashley Lawrence, Kadeisha Buchanan and Kailen Sheridan.
The seventh-ranked Canadians are a well-rounded team with depth at every position. Head coach Bev Priestman has put together a squad that features players who have consistently scored for club and country. Canada has several forward options who could lead the line. Make no mistake, this is a team with multiple world-class footballers who are playing at an elite level.
Still, Sinclair is the face of the team.
