Kansas City Current

Cece Kizer is one of the best attackers in the NWSL. Period.

As the 2022 season opened, the forward’s career was going nowhere. Once she returned home to Kansas City, she found her way and then some.

“A screaming comes across the sky. It has happened before, but there is nothing to compare it to now.”

A Thomas Pynchon quote, or an accurate description of Cece Kizer in a Kansas City Current uniform? Trick question: it’s both.

Little did we know that the 68th minute on June 18, 2022 in front of the home crowd was not simply a nice homecoming for the Overland Park native, but rather a harbinger of things to come.

The future Kizer signatures are all there: the barrelling run into space, reception of the pass at full tilt, the jink of the center back until there’s nothing impeding the ball’s path from the goalmouth, and then the firm strike that manages to defeat the fingertips of an élite keeper. Kansas City has become spoiled by these kinds of chances in the past year.
