The 23 players that will suit up for the U.S. women’s national team for the 2022 SheBelieves Cup have been named. Head coach Vlatko Andonovski picked 21 players from the National Women’s Soccer League and two overseas-based players for the seventh annual tournament.
Catarina Macario and Lindsey Horan — who just recently announced her loan to Lyon — will join from France. All other players are part of NWSL clubs, which have just begun preseason preparations.
The U.S. recently had a January camp in Austin, Texas, which featured players like Trinity Rodman, Morgan Weaver and other young players. However, Rodman was not called up on the official SheBelieves Cup roster, but will be with the team as a practice player. This is similar to Mallory Pugh’s inclusion as a practice player in 2021 for the tournament.
“We had a great camp in Austin and now we need to see this group of players in game environments against highly-motivated opponents,” Andonovski said. “Every player in the pool is focused on making the roster for World Cup and Olympic qualifying this summer, and every training session and especially every match is a means to that end for them, and for the coaching staff. The SheBelieves Cup is also a great opportunity to help prepare for rhythm of group play at the Concacaf W Championship as we have to face three different opponents and different styles of play over a short period of time.”
Of note, Becky Sauerbrunn returns to the fold after recovering from a “minor injury,” according to U.S. Soccer. Macario missed out on the January camp roster due to club competitions with Olympique Lyonnais.
