Breaking down the controversial Abby Smith foul on Bri Visalli

There were three main talking points that emerged from last weekend’s quarterfinal games of the 2020 National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup. There was the early exit for the North Carolina Courage, the final three matches being bereft of goals, and whether or not the call on Utah Royals goalkeeper Abby Smith was correct when she took down Houston Dash winger Bri Visalli in the 7th minute of Houston’s penalty-kick win.

Recently, a high-ranking official at the Professional Referees Organization (PRO) was nice enough to share a screen with me and break down the play for me frame by frame. Here’s what I learned.
