Keeping up the pressure: Analyzing Houston’s new look — and whether it can be sustained

The 2020 National Women’s Soccer League Challenge Cup has been wonderfully unpredictable so far. Just when teams (at least other than the North Carolina Courage) look set to pull away from the rest of the pack, they get drawn back in. The Houston Dash are firmly among them, beating OL Reign in one-sided fashion before losing to Sky Blue FC on Wednesday.

Despite the slight inconsistency, there are reasons for optimism within the Dash squad. They played their part in an exciting 3-3 draw with the Utah Royals in their opener and dished out a sensational pressing display in a 2-0 victory over OL Reign. Even in defeat to Sky Blue, Houston showed spirit and greater urgency to improve in the second half after going into the break two goals down. That response is still progress from previous years.

The Houston Dash are not perfect, but there are promising signs in the way they are playing right now. The foundation for their vibrant approach was laid well before this tournament.
