Red Stars, back in playoffs, hungry to better past results

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – For the fourth time in as many seasons, the Chicago Red Stars are heading to the playoffs of the National Women’s Soccer League.

The deciding moment came on Tuesday night at Toyota Park, with the Red Stars downing Sky Blue FC 5-0 to secure three points and guarantee themselves a spot among the top four teams in the league.

With a number of its key players away on international duty, the team relied on a brace from Alyssa Mautz—both on services from defender Arin Gilliland—before pulling away later in the contest with additional tallies from Sam Kerr, Rosie White, and Michele Vasconcelos.

“It’s definitely special for me just because I’ve been there since the very beginning,” said Mautz, who has played all six NWSL seasons with Chicago. “To finally be that player that they’re counting on and putting the goal away, it feels awesome.”
