Friday Roundup: Lisa Cole no longer with Dash

Lisa Cole confirmed via Twitter that she is no longer employed by the Houston Dash. Cole has been hired as an assistant coach to Vera Pauw, but The Equalizer has learned that arrangement lasted only two matches. She was conspicuously absent from the bench during the team’s 1-0 loss in Orlando last weekend. The Dash have not made any statement on the matter.

Cole was an original head coach in NWSL with the Boston Breakers. She spent three WPS seasons as first assistant to Tony DiCicco and was elevated to the head coaching spot when DiCicco stepped down. The league folded before Cole had a coached a game and she wound up leading the team to a first place finish in WPSL Elite before losing in the semifinals to the Chicago Red Stars. The Breakers joined WPS in 2013 and were 6-7-5 when they suddenly fired Cole with three games to play.

The Dash job was Cole’s first foray back into NWSL coaching. In the interim she spent time with the Papua New Guinea U-20s.

Julie Ertz off injury report

The injury report for this weekend’s NWSL matches brought a breath of fresh air to Chicago Red Stars fans. Julie Ertz’s name is not on it. The U.S. international has not played this season after injuring her knee during the SheBelieves Cup. The Red Stars will also welcome Sam Kerr to the team after she missed the first month of the regular season helping Australia finish second in the Asian Cup and qualify for the World Cup. The club will still be without Casey Short, Vanessa DiBernardo and Rosie White, all of whom remain out with injuries.

In other NWSL injury news, Megan Rapinoe remains out for the Reign and as reported Thursday, Adrianna Franch has joined Emily Menges on the Thorns list of injured. Hayley Raso and Caitlin Foord remain out for the Thorns as well. For the Courage, Abby Dahlkemper is questionable with an ankle sprain. The 2017 Defender of the Year has never missed a match through injury.
