Neither rain nor cold nor a loss could dampen Carli Lloyd’s New Jersey homecoming

PISCATAWAY, N.J.—Carli Lloyd’s homecoming didn’t go as planned. There was no warm, sunny backdrop on the day, replaced instead by gray skies, near freezing temperatures, and icy rain.

There was no sold-out crowd full with her friends and family scattered throughout. Instead, as the game wore on and conditions worsened, fewer and fewer fans were left huddled in the stands, braving the elements to support their team.

There was no game-winning goal from Lloyd the way there have been in so many other big moments in her career. Sky Blue dropped their home opener, 1-0, the only goal coming from Megan Rapinoe via penalty in the match’s opening minutes.

But for Lloyd, none of that really mattered.
