Groom goal gives Kansas City 1-0 win over WNY

Despite a franchise high 25 shots from the Western New York Flash, FC Kansas City was able to pull off a 1-0 win over the Flash on Saturday night at Rhinos Stadium in Rochester.

Both teams came out firing with numerous chances on goal, but neither could find the back of the net in the first half.

After the half-time break, Shea Groom put FC Kansas City on the board in the 60th minute. Groom received a long pass from Tiffany McCarty and was able to beat a defender in the Flash’s 18-yard box, before slotting her shot past keeper Katelyn Rowland.

The Flash had a great opportunity to equalize in the 86th minute, when they had three shots in succession on Kansas City’s goal. But great goalkeeping by Nicole Barnhart and a save off the line by defender Brittany Taylor preserved the win for the Blues.

Next up for the Flash is a trip to Houston to play the Dash next Saturday, July 30, while Kansas City will travel to Chicago next Saturday to play the Red Stars. Next week is the last week for NWSL matches before the Olympic break.
