The 2016 NWSL Championship will be decided at BBVA Compass Stadium On Sunday, October 9. NWSL commissioner Jeff Plush and Houston Dash president Chris Canetti made the announcement at the stadium ahead of Saturday’s Dash home opener.
“We are thrilled to announce that BBVA Compass Stadium, one of the best soccer venues in the country, will be the site of the 2016 NWSL Championship,” Plush said. “The city of Houston is a fantastic market for big events and has a strong history of always supporting them, whether it be the recently held NCAA Men’s Final Four or next year’s Super Bowl.”
The match will be broadcast live on FS1 as part of the league’s six-game package with FOX Sports. The regular season ends the last weekend in September followed by semifinal matches, which will likely be the following weekend.
This will be the second consecutive NWSL Championship to be played at a pre-determined site. Last year, a crowd of 13,264 was on hand at Providence Park in Portland despite only a few weeks’ notice that the format was even changing. The first two seasons, the highest-seeded finalist hosted the NWSL Championship.
