Seattle Reign FC have made their second international signing of the week, inking Swedish midfielder Antonia Göransson. The 25-year-old Stockholm native is expected to arrive in Seattle in time for the 2016 season. She most recently played for Vittsjo GIK in the Swedish Damallsvenskan.
“Antonia is someone that I have been watching for a while and I think has huge potential to make an impact in this league,” Reign head coach and general manager Laura Harvey said. “She can play in a variety of positions including left back and midfield which are areas we need to strengthen for the coming season.”
Göransson is listed as a midfielder, but left back is a position of need in Seattle after Stephanie Cox announced her retirement. The club briefly had Meghan Klingenberg but lost her in the expansion draft (she was ultimately traded to the Thorns).
Earlier this week, the Reign signed Netherlands striker Manon Melis.
Seattle also re-signed seven players — defenders Lauren Barnes, Kendall Fletcher and Elli Reed, midfielders Jess Fishlock, Keelin Winters and Kim Little, and goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer — and picked up options on Rachel Corsie, Merritt Mathias and Beverly Yanez.
Each NWSL team will have a starting point of four international roster spots in 2016, as The Equalizer’s Jeff Kassouf first reported. Jess Fishlock now has her green card, meaning the Reign’s four internationals are Melis, Göransson, Corsie and Little.
