USWNT wins Best Team award at ESPYS

The United States women’s national team won the Best Team award on Wednesday at the 2015 ESPYS, ESPN’s annual sports awards show.

The U.S. women beat out the Chicago Blackhawks, the Ohio State football team, the UConn women’s basketball team, the New England Patriots and the Golden State Warriors for the award.

“You guys believed in us the entire seven games, since four years ago when we fell short, to 10 days ago when we won it,” Abby Wambach said. “We lifted the trophy. We did this for America and our fans. You guys are the best and we love you so much, and I’m so happy that I have these girls to celebrate with. It’s been the best 10 days of our lives.”

Voting was submitted by fans for the award. The United States women’s performance at the World Cup was fresh in the minds of voters, with the U.S. having just defeated Japan, 5-2 on July 5 in to win the World Cup.

Two NWSL matches originally scheduled for Wednesday were rescheduled so that the U.S. team could attend the awards show. The Breakers-Red Stars game in Boston was rescheduled to next Wednesday, and FC Kansas City’s home match against the Houston Dash — originally scheduled for Wednesday at Sporting Park — will be played on Monday at Swope Soccer Park.
