After scoring a brace, Janine Beckie got called into double duty on Saturday. The 20-year-old played goalkeeper to end Canada’s 5-2 victory over Ecuador on Saturday on the opening day of the Pan Am Games after goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe was sent off in the 86th minute.
Canada had already used all three substitutions when Labbe was ejected, forcing Beckie into goal. Labbe will miss the team’s next match against Costa Rica.
Shelina Zadorsky also scored a brace for Canada.
Thaisa, Formiga and Raquel each scored for Brazil in a 3-0 win over Costa Rica.
Colombia kicked off the day with a 1-0 victory over Mexico behind Maria Usme’s 65th minute goal to open the tournament, and Argentina drew Trinidad and Tobago, 2-2. Belen Potassa gave Argentina the lead in the 88th minute, but Maylee Attin Johnson equalized for Trinidad and Tobago in the 90th minute.
