MONTREAL — The United States enters Tuesday’s Women’s World Cup semifinal against Germany with confidence after its best performance of the tournament against China.

Finally, things clicked. Carli Lloyd had her freedom. Kelley O’Hara provided a spark on the wing. Amy Rodriguez applied pressure up top. And the defense? Well, the defense did what the defense do, extending its shutout streak to 423 minutes.

But part of the changes were forced due to the suspensions of Megan Rapinoe and Lauren Holiday. Morgan Brian did well playing behind Carli Lloyd. Can that succeed once again? Will U.S. coach Jill Ellis even try it.

As I wrote on NBC SportsWorld, Tuesday marks Ellis’ most important tactical decisions of her career, and ther are many questions to be answered.
