Washington Spirit sign Nigerian forward Ordega

The Washington Spirit have signed Nigerian forward Francisca Ordega for the 2015 season. Ordega is expected to join the Spirit for the first six matches of the NWSL season, according to the club, before joining Nigeria for the 2015 Women’s World Cup.

“I am really happy to sign for the Spirit because it is a dream come true for me to play in the United States,” Ordega said. “I can’t wait to join the team and play in my first match.”

Ordega, 21, played for Nigeria at the 2011 World Cup and at last year’s African Women’s Championship. She previously played for Bayelsa Queens and Rivers Angels in Nigeria before transferring to Rossiyanka in Russia and, most recently, Piteå IF in Sweden.

“Francisca is a very hard working forward that will bring plenty of pace and power to our team,” Spirit coach Mark Parsons said. “She is an explosive player that has the ability to score and create goals and we are very excited to bring her to Washington D.C.”

Adding Ordega leaves Washington with one remaining international roster spot.
