Liverpool announced on Friday the signing of Nigerian international Asisat Oshoala.
Oshoala won the Golden Ball and the Golden Boot as the best player and top scorer at the 2014 U-20 Women’s World Cup, where Nigeria finished runners-up to Germany after an extra-time loss in the final. Oshoala is expected to play for Nigeria at this year’s senior World Cup.
“Since I began my football career I have always dreamt of being a professional footballer so to be able to join the reigning Women’s Super League champions is absolutely fantastic,” Oshoala said.
“Liverpool Ladies are a massive Club who have some fantastic players who I believe can help to develop my game to the next level. It was also a big incentive to be able to play in the UEFA Women’s Champions League which is a huge competition and one I’m confident we can do well in.”
Liverpool are two-time defending FAWSL champions after dramatically winning a second straight league title in October, climbing past Chelsea and Birmingham after starting the final day in third place.
Liverpool manager Matt Beard knows that he landed a prized player.
“We beat a number of top American and European clubs to Asisat’s signature,” he said. “Asisat is one of the best young players in the world.”
