Costa Rica tabs assistant Valverde as new coach

Left with no coach just five months before the World Cup after Carlos Avedissian jetted for Puerto Rico, Costa Rica decided to hire from within and promote Amelia Valverde to coach. Valverde will guide Las Ticas in Canada as they head to the World Cup for the first time.

Avedissian announced earlier this month that he was leaving for a job with Puerto Rico.

“There are very short preparation time so who better to lead the team that Amelia, she knows the group has very good acceptance by the players and has been throughout the process.She has the capacity to take over, ” Costa Rica federation president Adrian Gutierrez said.

Valerde has been around the program since 2011, with the senior team and the U-20s.

Costa Rica qualified for the World Cup in October, finishing second in CONCACAF behind the United States. Costa Rica will play Brazil, South Korea and Spain in the group stage at the World Cup.
