Portland Thorns FC pulled off the semi-miraculous on Sunday, handing Seattle Reign FC its second loss of the season to qualify for the postseason. That means Portland has a chance to defend its inaugural NWSL championship, and through a similar path: as the No. 3 seed, playing the semifinal at FC Kansas City.
Portland’s win came at the expense of the Chicago Red Stars, who lost out on a playoff spot to a tiebreaker with the Washington Spirit. Seattle will host Washington in the other.
