The United States advanced to the quarterfinals of he U-20 Women’s World Cup on Tuesday with a 3-0 win over China. The Americans go through as runners-up in Group B behind Germany, who beat Brazil 5-1 on Tuesday to win the group.
The U.S. will now face Korea DPR in the quarterfinals in Toronto, while Germany will face host Canada. North Korea lost to Canada, 1-0 on Tuesday, a result that still sent Korea DPR through as Group A winner on goal difference, while Canada advanced on a better goal difference than Ghana.
Lindsey Horan scored twice for the U.S. in the first half and Rose Lavelle scored in the second half to lift the Americans to a second straight victory after dropping their opener to Germany.
Makenzy Doniak crossed to Horan in the 19th minute for the opener, and Horan then doubled the lead in the 38th minute.
Lavelle’s goal came four minutes after halftime, and this time, Horan played provider. Horan found Lavelle on a cross, who cut to her right foot and slotted the ball past China goalkeeper Lu Feifei. [HIGHLIGHTS: USA-China]
