Alex Morgan says she is learning to be patient as she gets back to full fitness in her comeback from a 7-month absence due to a left ankle injury. Morgan debuted for Portland Thorns FC on Saturday, playing 90 minutes by necessity in a 5-0 loss to the Western New York Flash. But she said postgame she had nothing left in the tank after the 70th minute.
Now Morgan is in camp with the U.S. national team ahead of two friendly matches with France in the coming week. So too is Shannon Boxx, who is just trying to get back to playing shape after having her first child earlier this year. Both players are excited to be back in the fold.
“It’s been a long time, and even though I kind of feel like I am picking up where I left off, there’s a lot of catching up to do with the girls,” Morgan said. “So, it’s great to be back in with the team and have Jill be the official head coach and have her first training session with us.”
The U.S. women host world No. 4 France on Saturday in Tampa, Fla., and on Thursday in East Hartford, Conn.
