The Washington Spirit have signed defender Alex Singer for the remainder of the 2014 season and the 2015 season, bringing a familiar — and welcomed — face back to the Maryland SoccerPlex.
Singer will bring defensive depth to Mark Parson’s Spirit, which has resorted to playing Ali Krieger — one of the NWSL’s best right backs — at center back due to a lack of options centrally. Singer is expected to join the team as soon as possible following the Frauen-Bundesliga season with Turbine Potsdam, which ends on Sunday.
Washington will also receive defensive help via the Frauen-Bundesliga when American Niki Cross joins from Bayern Munich following the season.
“I’m really looking forward to joining the Spirit,” Singer said. “I’ve heard only great things about Mark’s philosophy and the club. I’ve been playing internationally for a few years now, and experienced different football styles and cultures so it’s exciting to come back to the US and especially to an environment like the SoccerPlex where I began my pro career. I’m super motivated and I can’t wait to start training and will do my best to help the team however I can.”
Singer, 26, played for the Washington Freedom from 2007-10. She has also played for Perth Glory of Australia, Dalsjöfors GoIF in Sweden and Turbine Potsdam in Germany. Her addition to Washington is pending the receipt of her International Transfer Certificate (ITC), which, as Abby Erceg and the Chicago Red Stars most recently learned, can take some time to go through.
