Some NWSL kit news dropped on Wednesday, and, well, we love kit news around here.
Expansion side Houston Dash is still the only team thus far to have officially unveiled its 2014 jerseys, but the Chicago Red Stars are about to be team No. 2. The Red Stars announced that they will release their home jerseys on Sunday via their team website (which also has a new look) as well as the Chicago Splash section of the Chicago Sun-Times.
Apparently, we should be expecting something awesome.
“This year’s home kit is not only going to excite local soccer fans, but also resonate with any proud Chicagoan,” said Red Stars GM Alyse LaHue. “Since our inaugural season in 2009, we’ve always selected elements from the Chicago city flag as the core icons of our club and jersey — celebrating this city, and our team heritage. This year the Red Stars are taking it to the next level by designing a custom kit through Nike that truly embodies the flag’s design.”
The Red Stars have had one of the most original designs since their inception in WPS. This is what the jerseys looked like in 2010 (Ella Masar is now in Houston…sorry, Chicago fans):

Defending NWSL champions Portland Thorns FC tweeted that they will unveil their new jersey the week prior to the season starting, which is consistent with what we’ve heard from some other teams:
2014 Thorns kits will likely be unveiled early the week of 4/7. Stay tuned for further details on timing and purchase info. #BAONPDX

Here’s to hoping there are some improved kits in 2014, though it sounds like nothing will be too customized until 2015.
