Mexico, Nigeria, Japan all win U-17 WWC openers

Mexico’s U-17 women cruised to victory in their 2014 World Cup opener on Sunday, beating Colombia 4-0. Nigeria and Japan were also winners, while New Zealand drew 1-1 with Paraguay.

Three goals in the opening 14 minutes were enough to put Mexico well in control early against Colombia. Viridiana Salazar opened the scoring three minutes in and Jacqueline Crowther and Janae Gonzalez added goals. Cinthia Huerta added the fourth goal in the 71st minute. Click here for highlights.

Asato Miyagawa and Shiho Matsubara scored in the 43rd and 51st seconds, respectively, to lift Japan past Spain. Click here for highlights.

Nigeria went up on China when Rasheedat Ajibade scored in the 21st minute and Uchenna Kanu doubled their lead in the 63rd minute. Fan Yuqiu scored one minute later, but China could not find an equalizer. Click here for highlights.

In the only draw of the day, Daisy Cleverley opened the scoring for New Zealand in the 69th minute with a wonderful goal, but Sheryl Barrios struck the equalizer in the 84th minute. Click here for highlights.
