Houston Dynamo president Chris Canetti tweeted the following on Saturday morning:
“Have decided to go forward in process. There are steps ahead before it can be final. Hope it works out.”
The critical piece of information here is that moving “forward” does not mean that Houston has a team already – as some seemed to interpret it Canetti’s tweet – though it looks more and more likely that there will be a NWSL team in Houston in 2014 or 2015, and the former still seems more likely than the latter.
Reached Saturday, the NWSL declined to divulge any detailed statements other than echoing what Canetti tweeted.
“We are continuing our discussions with Houston regarding expansion and the process is moving forward,” a league spokesman said via email.
Expect clarity to come this week, whether that’s a team in Houston in 2014, 2015, or none at all (which at this point looks incredibly unlikely).
