On-loan Washington Spirit midfielder Lori Lindsey began her season Down Under in style, scoring eight minutes into Canberra’s 3-0 season-opening win over Brisbane in Australia’s Westfield W-League season.

W-League all-time leading scorer Michelle Heyman’s brace sealed the result for Canberra, who were champions two seasons ago. Americans Stephanie Ochs and Kendall Fletcher each went the full 90 minutes.

Defending champions Sydney FC picked up where they left off, demolishing Melbourne Victory, 5-1. Emma Checker gave Melbourne a lead in just the 3rd minute, but Sydney took over from there. Nicola Bolger notched a brace along with goals from Jodie Taylor, Emma Kete and Leena Khamis.

Perth also put up five goals on Newcastle Jets, with Australian Katie Gill scoring in the first minute for the Perth Glory. Hannah Beard equalized four minutes later, but Collette McCallum scored in the 10th minute for Perth and late goals from Christina Julien, Rosie Sutton and Marianna Tabian gave Perth a 5-2 win.

And Western Sydney Wanderers clawed back for a 1-1 draw with Adelaide United behind a second half stoppage time equalizer from Catherine Cannuli. After finishing in last place for three consecutive seasons, Adelaide hoped they had secured a win in their opener when Alexandra Gummer scored in the 31st minute, but they were denied the three points at the stroke of the final whistle.
