U.S. women’s national team midfielder Megan Rapinoe will return to play for French champion Lyon for the 2013-14 season and rejoin Seattle Reign FC in June, midway through the 2014 National Women’s Soccer League season. The arrangement is similar to the one that she had with the club this past NWSL season, although she didn’t join Lyon until January.
Seattle Reign FC owner Bill Predmore tells me he expects Rapinoe to play the entire 2015 NWSL season, and that the decision to play in France this fall through spring was entirely of Rapinoe’s ambitions.
“I had a fantastic time playing for Reign FC this season and am looking forward to returning to the club next June,” Rapinoe said. “I am impressed by the league and the organization that Laura is putting together—it is clear she is building a club that will be very competitive in the NWSL next season and beyond. However, I am at a stage in my career where returning to Lyon and playing in the Champions League is an opportunity that I cannot pass up.”
