Sky Blue FC announced that defender Kelley O’Hara will undergo reconstructive right ankle surgery on Thursday and will be out 4-6 months.
The 25-year-old has not played for Sky Blue FC since July 6. She was lightly used by the U.S. national team in their trio of June matches, only being substituted in at the 52nd minute in the match against the Korea Republic on June 20th.
The timeline for O’Hara’s surgery and rehab should ensure that she is able to return in time for the start of the 2014 NWSL preseason.
In the Sky Blue FC press release, O’Hara stated that she had exhausted all other treatment options. “Although I’m not pumped to be having surgery, I’m excited to know that the healing process will begin on Thursday and that’s the first step to getting back on the field and being able to play the way I want to play.”
Notably, O’Hara had sent out a photo on July 28 of her walking boot, along with her similarly booted teammate Caitlin Foord.
As Sky Blue FC heads into the final week of NWSL action against the Washington Spirit and into the playoffs, they remain a team decimated by injuries, with O’Hara, Foord, Brittany Bock, Lisa De Vanna, Danesha Adams, and Lindsi Lisonbee-Cutshall all listed on the August 9 official injury report from the league.
