Sweden, Italy advance to knockout stage

Hosts Sweden routed Italy to win Group A at Euro 2013 with the Italians also going through to the knockout phase.  In the other Group A match Finland were eliminated through a 1-1 draw with Denmark, the Danes left to sweat out the next two days to see if they can squeeze out a berth in the last eight.

Tuesday in Group A:

Sweden 3-1 Italy

A Raffaella Manieri own goal just after halftime opened the scoring for Pia Sundhage’s Sweden side who won safely in the end to finish unbeaten and top of the group.  Sweden will play the 3rd place finisher from either Group B or C.  Italy will play Group B runner-up.

Denmark 1-1 Finland

Finnish captain Annica Sjölund’s equalized in the 90th minute to pull her side on level terms but it was their last breath of Euro 2013 after the draw with Denmark eliminated the Finns.  The Danes would have gone through with the full three points but are instead left to root on a series of miracle results over the final two days of group play.
