It was a busy weekend in Sweden with some enticing games in Euro 2013. There’s no rest as they continue with a critical England-Russia match-up on Monday, so here is a quick take on what you missed over the weekend:
Saturday in Group A:
The hosts thumped Finland behind two opening goals from defender Nilla Fischer, a third from Kosovare Asllani and a second half brace from Lotta Schelin.
Italy kept pace with Sweden in Group A on goals from Melania Gabbiadini and Ilaria Mauro. Mia Brogaard gave Denmark hope in the 66th minute — just minutes after both of the Azzurre’s goals — but it wasn’t enough. Sweden and Italy play in the final group game on Tuesday.
Sunday in Group B:
This one was never much of a contest as CĂ©lia Okoyino da Mbabi scored twice and Lena Lotzen added another to boost Germany to 4 pts. and group co-leaders.
Solveig Gulbrandsen scored the lone goal in the 54th minute to help Norway keep pace with Germany. WPS fans will remember Gulbrandsen’s name from her time with WPS in 2010, which was cut short when she decided to return home and temporarily retire.
