Four teams collect weekend preseason wins

Abby Wambach

Abby Wambach had a goal and an assist in her first time suiting up for the Western New York Flash who drilled Penn State, 7-0 in a preseason contest Saturady at Sahlen’s Sports Park. The Flash led 3-0 after 21 minutes behind goals from Adriana SantaMaria, Wambach, and Vicki DiMartino. Australian midfielder Samantha Kerr made it 4-0 in the 64th minute and SantaMaria added a 5th—her second of the day—three minutes later. Jodi-Ann Robinson joined the party with two late goals to close out the scoring.

Rookie goalkeeper Adrianna Franch was in goal for the match. Franch was recently called into her first U.S. national team camp ahead of friendlies against Holland and Germany next month.

The Flash improved to 2-0 in preseason. They beat Canisius College in their first match as an NWSL side.

In other preseason action, Alyssa Mautz scored both goals for the Red Stars in a 2-0 victory over Marquette. Snow fell during much of the first half but the Red Stars were still able to come up with a goal before adding another shortly after halftime.

The Red Stars also unveiled their 2013 home kits on Twitter before the match.

Seattle Reign FC wrapped up their Japan trip with a 4-0 victory over Nojima Stella Kanagawa. Tiffany Cameron, Kaylyn Kyle, Emily Zurrer, and Kristin Meier hit the scoresheet for the Reign. Meier replaced Kyle after the Canadian midfielder went off with an unspecified injury. Michelle Betos preserved the shutout by saving a Nojima penalty kick.

Sky Blue FC debuted its new squad after a year hiatus by putting five goals on St. John’s in a 5-0 victory Saturday.  Kelley O’Hara opened the scoring and Kendall Johnson and Katy Frierson added two each in the victory.  Johnson’s first was a penalty conversion after she earned the spot kick.  Sky Blue did not field a team in 2012 after three seasons in WPS.

The Spirit were held to a scoreless draw by Duke. Equalizer’s Jennifer Gordon was on the scene.

The Boston Breakers announced a preseason match-up for this Wednesday, March 27 against Sky Blue FC at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, MA. This will be the first time two NWSL teams face each other this season. The game will start at 6:15 PM EST, but will not be streamed or broadcast online.
