Kyah Simon is the final free agent signed for the Boston Breakers. The team announced her return today after the conclusion of the supplemental draft.
Simon was a huge offensive weapon for the Breakers in the 2012 WPSL Elite season, and will join a team already stacked with Sydney Leroux, Lianne Sanderson, and Katie Schoepfer, not to mention the young allocation and draft picks.
Simon’s speed and physicality will make her a natural partner for Leroux, and along with the service of Heather O’Reilly, the Breakers are shaping up to have one of the strongest and deepest offenses in the league. While the Breakers favored the 4-4-2 last season, they now have the roster to support a more attack-minded formation.
While Kyah Simon was able to dominate the WPSL Elite, she will have the chance to prove herself capable of the next level in the NWSL. Her season back home in Australia probably already assuaged any concerns the Boston Breakers may have had about Simon’s abilities. Her performance in the W-League’s championship match against Melbourne included a goal and an assist, and she was named player of the match.
In an interview with the Equalizer, Head Coach Lisa Cole praised Simon’s talents. “She’s going to be someone we’re not just talking about in the professional league in the US, but somebody that we’re going to be talking about on the international scene. She just has so much upside.”
Cole added, “Her ability to play balls in and cross and then take people on one-v.-one, and then also be able to find goals herself is unique.”
The Breakers’ four free agents have all now been announced. The four are Cat Whitehill, Lianne Sanderson, Kia McNeill, and Kyah Simon.
