The Boston Breakers have signed Lianne Sanderson as a free agent, joining Cat Whitehill as officially on the roster. The last two free agent spots for the Breakers are still unannounced.
Sanderson will add experience to a young Boston offense, having played for the England National Team until 2010, as well as at the club level for Arsenal LFC, Chelsea LFC, RCD Espanyol, and for the Philadelphia Independence in the WPS. Last summer, she scored six goals in seven appearances for DC United in the W-League.
Sanderson is likely to be a significant part of the Breakers offense as Head Coach Lisa Cole develops allocated players like Adriana Leon of Canada and Anisa Guajardo of Mexico.
Expect the Breakers to pick up Joanna Lohman as well, either by announcing her as one of the two remaining free agents or during the draft on February 7. Only the Washington Spirit or Seattle Reign FC would be able to interfere if the Breakers use their first round pick to ensure Sanderson and Lohman are able to play together.
While the Breakers announced the news on Twitter this morning, Sanderson’s contract has not received final approval from U.S. Soccer.
