Lyon wins women’s club championship

Lyon can (s0rt of) claim to be world club champions after defeating Japanese superclub INAC Kobe 2-1 on Sunday in the Mobcast Cup.

Corine Franco scored late for Lyon to equalize Ji So-Yun’s early strike for INAC Kobe and Sonia Bompastor scored in extra time to lift Lyon to the title. Lyon is the two-time defending UEFA Women’s Champions League title holder. Read the (translated) reactions of players here.

The Mobcast Cup has been billed as something of a women’s world club championship. It’s the closest thing there is to one at this point, given the presence of Lyon and INAC Kobe, but the other two participants were NTV Beleza of Japan and Canberra United of Australia.

Budgetary constraints would play a role, but a U.S. team, from the new league set to begin in 2013, in this tournament would be great to see in the future.
